Kidney Yang Deficiency

肾阳虚 Shen Yang Xu Kidney system

The Kidney's pilot light has burned low. The whole body runs cold: a cold aching low back, cold knees and feet, a pale face, clear urine that comes often and at night, low drive, and an exhaustion that is worse in winter. This is the opposite temperature from Kidney yin deficiency, and it needs the opposite formula.

The Kidney holds the body's pilot light. When it burns low, nothing downstream gets warm: the back, the feet, the bladder, the bedroom. You can add all the water you like, and a cold stove still will not cook.

How Kidney Yang Deficiency differs from its look-alikes

  • Kidney Yin Deficiency The mirror image. Yin deficiency is warm and dry: night sweats, hot palms, a red peeled tongue. Yang deficiency is cold and wet: cold back, clear urine, a pale wet tongue. The two base formulas differ by two herbs, cinnamon bark and aconite, and getting the temperature wrong makes the person worse.
  • Spleen Yang Deficiency Spleen yang deficiency is cold in the gut: cold belly, watery stools, undigested food. Kidney yang deficiency is cold in the back, knees, bladder, and bedroom. They often appear together.
  • Kidney Essence Deficiency Essence deficiency shows in structure: weak bones, early loose teeth, grey hair, slow growth. It can sit under either yin or yang deficiency.

What drains into Kidney Yang Deficiency

  • Aging
  • Long illness or long cold exposure
  • Overwork and too little sleep
  • Too much sexual activity over years
  • A constitution that was cold from birth
  • Long courses of cold or bitter medicines
  • Spleen yang deficiency that sank into the Kidney

Food and habits that help Kidney Yang Deficiency

  • Keep the low back and feet warm. A hot water bottle on the back in the evening.
  • Warm cooked food: lamb, walnuts, chestnuts, ginger, cinnamon, black beans, leeks, bone broth. Nothing iced, nothing raw in cold weather.
  • Sleep before eleven and sleep enough. Yang is rebuilt in the early morning hours.
  • Gentle, warming movement every day: walking, qigong. Not exhausting training.
  • Avoid cold drafts on the back and feet. The old doctors meant it.

What should change as Kidney Yang Deficiency improves

  • Cold feet and the cold back warm within two to four weeks.
  • Night urination drops first, then daytime frequency.
  • Morning energy improves over a month.
  • The tongue loses its wet swollen look.
  • Warming formulas can cause a dry mouth or restlessness if the dose is too high or yin is also low. Reduce the dose and reassess.

A pattern is a picture, not a diagnosis. Most people carry two patterns at once, and the signs here are the classic ones, not a checklist. Use this page to recognize yourself, read a formula label with understanding, and ask a qualified practitioner a sharper question.
