Heart Blood Deficiency

心血虚 Xin Xue Xu Heart system

The Heart does not have enough blood to rest in at night. Sleep is light and full of dreams, the mind startles easily, memory slips, the heart flutters when you are anxious, and the face and lips are pale. Digestion is often fine, which is what separates it from the Heart and Spleen picture.

The mind is said to sleep in the blood the way a boat rests on water. When the water is low the boat bumps the bottom all night. More water, quieter boat.

How Heart Blood Deficiency differs from its look-alikes

  • Heart and Spleen Deficiency Add poor appetite, bloating, loose stools, and slow pale bleeding, and the Spleen has joined in. The formula shifts from a Heart tonic to Gui Pi Tang, which feeds both.
  • Heart Yin Deficiency Heart yin deficiency sleeps badly with heat: night sweats, a dry mouth, a red tongue tip, restlessness. Blood deficiency is pale and cool.

  • A diet with too little to build blood from

Food and habits that help Heart Blood Deficiency

  • Blood-building foods: red meat or liver in small amounts, eggs, dates, longan, black sesame, beets, dark greens, bone broth.
  • Stop mental work an hour before bed. The Heart needs the blood the mind is spending.
  • A warm foot bath before bed draws the mind down.

Important Note

A pattern is a picture, not a diagnosis. Most people carry two patterns at once, and the signs here are the classic ones, not a checklist. Use this page to recognize yourself, read a formula label with understanding, and ask a qualified practitioner a sharper question.
