Prepared Licorice Root … Safety & Interactions

Zhi Cao · Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension, edema, hypokalemia, or severe heart failure
  • High-dose or prolonged unsupervised use

Cautions

  • Prepared licorice is still real licorice and still carries glycyrrhizin-related risks.
  • Even when the preparation style is drier and less glossy than honey-fried licorice, it can still promote fluid retention, raise blood pressure, and lower potassium in susceptible patients.

Drug Interactions

Loop or thiazide diuretics ... additive potassium loss and arrhythmia risk
Digoxin and other cardiac glycosides ... hypokalemia may increase toxicity risk
